As the news of golf superstar Tiger Woods' alleged multiple affairs spills all over the media, a fascinating - and disturbing - subplot to the story has become a revealing litmus test of societal attitudes toward gender and domestic violence.
Persistent rumors allege that the November 27 car accident in which Woods hit a fire hydrant and then a tree while backing out of his driveway around 2:30 a.m. was linked to an assault on the golfer by his wife Elin Nordegren - and that the cuts and bruises on Woods' face were the result of the assault, not the accident. These claims have been strongly denied by the police and by others; the official version is that Nordegren rushed to her husband's aid after the accident and smashed the car window with a golf club to free him. Nonetheless, further tales of marital fighting will no doubt be fueled by Woods' confession on December 2 to unspecified "transgressions" against his family and by new allegations of a recorded voice-mail message in which he supposedly tells his mistress his wife has found her number on his phone.

The point isn't that these people are innocent angels or horrible people, but that domestic violence is more complicated than we like to think, and that it happens to anyone, man or woman, gay or straight. Domestic Violence, also referred to as intimate partner violence, is a systematic, escalating pattern of abuse where one partner in an intimate relationship controls the other through coercive behaviors, force, intimidation, and/or the threat of violence. Domestic violence may include not only the intimate partner relationships of spousal, live-in partners and dating relationships, also familial, elder, and child abuse may be present in a violent home.
Abuse occurs at epidemic proportions in our society. In the United States, an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. When we read statistics it can be easy to forget that each number represents a real person; given that one in four women in our society experience abuse, that person will likely be someone that you know -- a parent, a relative, a sibling, a cousin, a co-worker, a neighbor or a friend.

Delhi (Hindi): Husband killed himself in Rohini on Saturday Night after a tiff with his wife. Police have not found any suicide note from him. They have sent the body to the Sanjay Gandhi Smarak Hospital for postmortem.
Manohar Lal aka Babban (36) lived at Rohini sector-25 with his family. He has a garments shop in Rohini sector-17. According to the police he had some quarrel with his wife on the day of Diwali. Since then they had constant tension between them. Saturday night he committed suicide by hanging himself from the cieling fan. The wife reported the incident to the Shahbad Dairy Police in the morning.
LOS ANGELES/October 9, 2009—October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the National Coalition For Men (NCFM) anticipates two successful high profile legal rulings this year and last year in West Virginia and California, respectively, will bring needed attention to the hidden, overlooked side of partner abuse - male victims.
On October 2, 2009, a West Virginia judge struck down state rules for regulating domestic violence shelters because they operate “on the premise that only men can be batterers and only women can be victims” and “exclude adult and adolescent males from their statutory right to safety and security free from domestic violence” based only on their gender.”
